Encountering Reality

Spirituality is not about learning more creative ways to improve, alter, or defend ourselves from experience. It is about having a real encounter with what is.

Encounter is an interesting word, because it connotes connection that is difficult or challenging. If we look at the truth of our experience when things are challenging, is there an element of backing away, of buffering, resisting or clinging? Equanimity, the non-resistance that is an essential ingredient of meeting reality head on, for which meditation trains us, is embracing the encounter with each moment.

Meditation is deep training in meeting reality as it is. We share in the willingness to experience ourselves, each other, and the world, exactly as they are, without resistance, shame, pretense, judgment or analysis. This is encountering reality. And as we allow this more and more, we find that our reality, our being, is love.

Are you longing for love? To be naked and vulnerable to the truth of who you are, allowing yourself to become fully what you want in this miraculous life?

This is not something anyone can give you, but a strong, supportive meditation practice can facilitate and empower the process. We can rarely do this alone. Sangha means practicing together for everyone’s collective awakening, with each member taking responsibility not just for themselves, but for each other. While more is asked from you, the resulting growth and transformation make it exceptionally worthwhile.

This is not about talent, the past, books you have read, teachers you know, or having “spiritual” experiences. The sincere willingness to dedicate yourself to the truth of your experience in each moment is the foundation of real spiritual practice.
